Now that Shabbat is over, machaneh (camp) is back to its daily grind. Things started out with hitkasut boker (flag raising ceremony) and ivrit shimushit. Then came a yummy breakfast of potato blintzes.
Pish aleph (first age group activity) was as fun as always. The Bonimot, Sayarimot, and Bogrimot all discussed how we at Galil are part of the Habonim Dror youth movement. They learned about everything from our movement's pillars (Zionism, Hagshama (actualization), Socialism, Judaism, Social Justice), famous graduates of our movement (Seth Rogan and Golda Meir to name 2), our Israeli sister mvoement (Hanoar Ha'oved), and a bit of history. Fun fact: Habonim and Dror used to actually be 2 different movements and 1 out of our 6 camps was originally a Dror camp while the rest were part of Habonim!
Chotrimot having fun during Pish Aleph |
The Chotrimot took a different route and talked about informal education and the challenges with formal school institutions. They were first given papers and told to draw something and then given grades using an arbitrary grading system. They were then given labels that they did not know and everybody else would treat them according to their tape label. This part was to mimic schools in general. They then got into a circle and discussed what had happened.
The Amelimot had some fun in the pool for the first half of pish and then did an art project that would be used to introduce them to their Am-Bo buddies during schiyat chofshit (free swim). Am-bo buddies are Amerlimot-Bogrimot buddies that are there to make the transition to sleep-away camp a little easier for our youngest chanichimot (campers).
The Tzophimot did a slightly different discussion from the rest of machaneh. They discussed a recent proposal from Habonim Dror's most recent Veida in 2015. The proposal discussed had our movement using an "-ol" non gendered ending for singular in Hebrew and "-imot" ending for a plural Hebrew suffix. You may be thinking at this point, "what is Veida?" Do not fear, that was a point of discussion for pish bet (2nd age group activity).
Sayarimot can't help but smile while learning about Veida |
After pish it was time for sports and eventually a delicious lunch of chicken nuggets and fries. After that was some menucha (rest time) and then back to pish bet (second age group acitivty). This pish focused on Veida for all chanichimot as we have a machaneh Veida tonight. Veida literally translates to conference and every 2 years, Habonim Dror North America has a massive one where people from all over the continent send in proposals on what they think should be changed or added in to the movement at large. Veida, thus, becomes a way for the movement to self govern. About once a summer we have a Veida here at machaneh. It's supposed to serve as a practice for our chanichimot as one day they will become full movement members and go to real Veida, but sometimes the proposals actually pass and Veida becomes a real way for chanichimot to change macahneh. A few years ago somebody proposed we raised our movement flag in addition to the Israeli and American one and now that is actually a thing! Therefore, during pish today, the chanichimot learned all this about Veida and learned how to write proposals. They, then, actually wrote some to appear at Veida tonight!
Am-Bo buddies hanging out for the first time! |
Later it was time for schiya chofshit. For the Amelimot and Bogrimot this schiya chofshit was extra special as they finally got their am-bo buddies! The madrichimot (counselors) took the pictures the kids had drawn during pish aleph and cut them into puzzle pieces so the Amelimot and the Bogrimot had matching pieces so they could find one another! Then they all went to the pool and got to know each other better by having a great time splashing around.
Later dinner was ravioli, green beans, and garlic bread. It was delicious as usual.
The tochnit erev (evening activity) was, as mentioned before, Veida! A lot of proposals were brought to the floor and almost all were passed. One proposal that was passed that I have always felt especially passionate about was the addition of recycling bins to machaneh. The chanichimot truly got a better feel of what it means to be an active member of the movement and how good it feels to have their voices heard to make a change.
Well, that's all for today!
See you again tomorrow!
-Miriam
