Cloudy With a Chance of Nitzanim

It was a chilly morning this morning with the chanichim (kids) wearing sweatshirts as they made their way to the torren (flagpole) for hitkansut boker (morning flag raising). Aruchat boker was oatmeal served with fruit, brown sugar, yogurt, and cottage cheese; we also played music throughout the meal and chanichim were singing and dancing. Machaneh got beautified during avoda (chores) and nikyon tzrif (cabin cleaning). The tzvatim (staff) then prepared for peula shichva alef (first age group activity).

The Bogrim (post 9th graders) spent a few days making their way through "The Matrix" and are now using the movie to discuss awareness of social reality and the systems of oppression in it. They want the chanichim to understand that they are influenced by social systems in the real world and they should be aware of that. The Bonim (post 8th graders) and Tzofim (post 7th graders) are still on tiyul (camping) but should be returning by the end of the afternoon. The Sayarim (post 6th graders) had their second instructional swim of the session and the Chotrim (post 5th graders) were gearing up for the oneg (skit) on Friday by practicing their jokes and running through the performance. The Amelim (post 4th graders) had a meaningful discussion on gender equality and feminism and how those two things are viewed in today's society.

Today is a special day for another reason, the nitzanim have arrived! The nitzanim are a group of young kids who come to machaneh (camp) for a few days to get a taste of what Galil is like. A few old tzevet members come by to be madrichim and run insanely fun activities for the chanichim. Today they started off with some fun ice-breakers, played sports, and went swimming until aruchat tzohorayim (lunch). After lunch they had a treasure hunt around machaneh so they could familiarize themselves with the camp site and where everything is. The treasure hunt ended in the creek where they went swimming and played games. Following the treasure hunt, the chanichim got changed and made their way to the gan (garden) where they saw all of the things we are growing and had a little kibud (snack). They then joined up with the rest of machaneh for shira (singing) and hitkansut erev (evening flag raising). It was a very fun and successful first day for the youngsters.

The rest of machaneh had a typical day in the meantime. Following aruchat tzohorayim there was a bit of rest time before chugim (electives). Chugim was followed up by peula shichva bet (second age group activity) where many of the shcavot (age groups) continued conversations or activities they had started this morning. For example, the Chotrim were continuing to practice the oneg for Friday, and the Sayarim continued to perfect their kabalat shabbat (kabalat is a performance done by a shichva every week) dance.

Suddenly it was shira and hitkansut and another great day at machaneh came to a close. The chanichim are preparing to head to aruchat erev (dinner) and then relax for a little before our tochnit erev. Tonight we are planning to do a mock Veida. Veida is a seminar every two years that reminds me a little bit of Hyde Park. Essentially, people from all of the machanot get together and talk about the direction in which they want the movement to go. Its a seminar for post MBI chanichim and ma'apilim (adults). During the mock Veida we will discuss how we want Galil to change in the near, but also not so near, future. The chanichim usually come up with great ideas that can lead to substantial changes around camp. Its great to see how much they care about this place. Tomorrow will be a very exciting day, just wait and see.

Until then, erev tov (good evening)

-Mike
