Get to know the voice of Galil 2013, our Communications Specialist, Toviah Botwinik! Toviah will spend this summer (his 8th at Galil) taking pictures and writing our daily blog post. First we are turning the camera around on him...
Name: Toviah Botwinik
Hometown: Havertown, PA
Years at Galil: I was a camper from 2006 to 2011, then a counselor-in-training last summer. This is my first year on staff!
How did you learn about Galil: I learned about Galil from my mother who went there as a child. Growing up, camp was always something I learned forward to.
Favorite camp memory: My favorite camp memory is working in the kitchen (mitbach) during special days. There's something so exciting about cooking special food for the entire camp (machaneh)!
Favorite part of the camp schedule: Family time (mishpachot) on Friday afternoons. Reflecting over the week with so many age groups (shkavot) is one of the most calming and pleasant experiences.
Favorite special day or trip: The annual camping trip (tiyul) is definitely one of my favorite out-of-camp trips. Hiking with your age group really brings everyone together.
Favorite camp song: Singing in the Rain.
What are you excited about for Galil 2013: I am most excited to document the fun all of the campers (chanichim) experience daily and help keep the underlying technology at camp running smoothly.
What are your future plans: Next year I will spend the year in Israel on Workshop, Habonim Dror North America's gap year program. After that I will be attending McGill University, most likely with a focus on Computer Science. My lifelong goals include working as an artist/designer or director for video games or movies.
What experience will you bring to the role of Communications Specialist: Around the end of Middle School, my friends and I began and iPhone app development company and a technology-based YouTube channel which has gained over 10,000 subscribers in its lifetime. In my Junior year of High School I began really liking writing of all kinds, specifically creative writing. I also began experimenting in photography while learning filmmaking and editing. Of all the subjects i photograph, I enjoy taking pictures of people and nature the most.
Fun Fact: I speak three languages fluently (including Yiddish and Hebrew) and I'm working on French!
